1997 850 wagon All coolant runs straight into oil pan

Post by Nightc »

I was driving and I noticed the oil light come on then went off. I got spooked and turned around the engine extremely hot but never oil light or overheat lost power and stopped. Am I screwed or just head gasket? Help

It could be the head gasket or you could have cracked the block or the head. I would start the investigation by doing a compression test. After you measure the compression on all cylinders post the numbers back and we can tell you a bit more.

Does the coolant run into the sump when the car is not running? If so, that pretty much means the end of the engine.

compression test. Could just be the oil cooler has let go - if you got it shut down in a minute to two, you will be ok.

Well I recently had the oil changed and I noticed that oil was leaking out of bolts on the valve cover that wasnt there before on the fateful day. The motor in general sounds weird when I turn it over. It sounds like there is no strain from compression at all. The water I pour in goes straight to the oil pan. The engine was super hot and the oil on the dipstick with the water seems to be way over the full mark.

Ok, get the plugs out and let's get the compression numbers.

It could be as simple as the oil cooler has failed allowing oil and coolant to mix
