I just put new centric premium rotors and new (seemed like higher quality) pads on the front of my vehicle. After one month the brakes started to squeak. I took off the rotors and noticed they had become glazed. My mechanic friend told me that was due to the pads being too metallic (he proved this with a magnet). We sanded the rotors with 220 or 300 grit sand paper and put it back together. It stopped squeaking, but now after another 2 weeks and maybe 500 miles is stating to squeak again. He recommended getting softer pads? Any one know if the original equipment pads are semi-metallic and will contribute to glazing the rotors, or if this is caused by the pads at all?
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Rotors are metal, and any brake pad operates on a metal rotor. A brake pad should never glaze a rotor unless it is not retracting properly when the brake pedal is released.
When you took apart the caliper, you removed two recessed hex head pins (I am assuming a type of brake caliper common on Volvos). The caliper "floats" on these pins. When reinstalling the pins, you should clean them and then coat them with copper (high temp) grease so that the caliper continues to move properly on the pins. The pads will squeak if the caliper does not move freely.

I too would like to know who is the culprit, either the disc, or the pads.
I will change my pads for Akebono, will see how it goes from there. The original Volvo pads are too dusty.

I don't know what my pads are but they are quite dusty, so perhaps OEM. Quality ceramic pads are generally well regarded. Akebono are ceramic.
