I also was getting alarm error every time I start the car. I got v70 2001, but that is the same story.
When I opened siren the inside looked like in first post pics.
So I cleened and fixed missing cooper by solderin small wires.
for battery I used two packs of 3.6v in line.
thats all ! ewerything works again. wery happy. expenses 10eur for battery
and pics. everybody likes visual proof.

Thanks to vegasjetskier for starting this thread, and everyone else who has contributed to it over the years. This was tremendously helpful when I replaced the siren on my 2001 V70 T5 yesterday. It should take no more than a few hours to do the job for anyone else wanting to replace the siren.
I was starting to have unintentional unlocks...I would lock the car, and come back a little while later and the front doors would be unlocked and the dash signaled that the alarm had been triggered. I said this was no good if someone could easily enter the car after I thought she was secure. The immediate fix was to remove fuse #38 (5 amp). This allowed the car to stay locked, but then I received the " Siren Alarm needs Servicing" message on the dash. A quick check of this web site, and the solution was in my hands.
A new Volvo Alarm Siren (PN 9452709) was much more expensive than when this thread was started. The cheapest I could find online was $198.74 + 18.95 shipping from Jim Ellis Volvo of Marietta. I spend about $10 on the 5 new rivets from my local Volvo dealer in Charleston. With parts, tools and instructions in hand, she was an easy Saturday afternoon job.
Just a few hints. The security screw holding the module can be unscrewed with pliers...no need to drill it out. Also, the 3x lock/unlock did not work originally. I did the door key 3x lock/unlock and then checked the "locked car and open door thru open window test" and the siren wailed. My dog hated it. I knew then that all was repaired. I do not have a sunroof, so I couldn't confirm other posters observations that replacing the siren also fixed their sunroof problems.
I disassembed the old alarm siren and clearly, the connecting wires to the battery were corroded, one completely so there was no connection. The circuit board also had corrosion, so no cheap $20 battery repair like so many other posters have done.
My advice for anyone with this problem, get new parts, get your tools, follow the advice in this thread, and repair it yourself. When the work is done, and you are satisfied of the work you did and labor $ you saved, sit back and enjoy a nice cold beverage.

Thanks to vegasjetskier and anyone who is invigorating this great thread! Really appreciate your support! I replaced the Alarm Siren on my S80 from 1999 today with no problems at all - thanks to the great step by step how-to of vegasjetskier.
Before I have had several problems with error messages like "Alarm System service required", "Brake failture, stop safely ASAP" and "Immobilizer". Moreover Rooftop was not working, Fuel Cap not locking anymore, Battery draining and therefore i also got an error Message for ABS. My car sometimes even refused to start.
So i did some research and found this great thread. However, after replacing the Siren, the error message "Alarm System Service required" persists. But all functions are working so far like the Alarm, Rooftop etc. No more error messages except for the "Alarm System service required" message. I tried the reset procedure (lock and unlock 3 times with the key at drivers door), but the error message persits anyways. Any idea how to get rid of it?

The little screw that keeps the siren in place has a small nut on the other side of the wall, under the hood behind the ECU housing. Not easy to reach, but perhaps easier than having the screw head drilled.

Hi, I would like to just disconnect my siren unit to stop it draining the battery, does anyone know if it can be disconnected easily inside the car, to save having to remove the wheel arch liner?

Compared to the Dealer's OEM part http://volvopartslisle.com/part/OEM-Vol ... 2709/Siren the FCP's replacement at $249.00 looks significantly overpriced, even with fasteners included... (over 20% is far beyond justifiable) 
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I took it out of that bracket and re-used the one in the car, and it went right back in with only a little coaxing
