1999 V70 T5 - doing a bunch of maintenance!

Post by petermetzger »

Hi everybody!

I'm going to be doing a bunch of maintenance on my '99 V70 T5 this weekend so I'm starting this thread to document my progress. Everything I'm doing has been well-explained in videos already (big thanks to rspi, FCP, and others!) so I'm not planning to do any detailed documentation but I'd be happy to answer any questions anybody has.

I got started last night with replacing the fuel filter, which I'm pretty sure had never been done before. Here's the old one:

And here's the new one:

ahhh, much better.

More stuff to come!

Yikes! Thanks for sharing, interested in what else you'll be tackling and what you find. But if this is an indication, we're prepared for the worst!

That was a gnarly looking fuel filter! :D
I'm looking forward to the rest of the tale as well - we can never have enough pics and maintenance-documentation. :)

New air filter! I installed the old one almost exactly two years ago, though I didn't realize that when I ordered the new one. I just figured it had been a while and that I should probably replace it. (I know, all of us data purists are cringing. It will be okay; let's all take a deep breath. )

Just for fun I fanned the old one out and shook it onto a piece of paper for about 10 seconds:

Up next: the cabin air filter, which I didn't even know existed for the first year I had the car and which has not been changed in a long, long time (at least 4 years because I hadn't changed it until today).... but how bad can it be?

Let's get this little guy tucked in for the night:

I went with one of the aftermarket filters with charcoal in it.

Mine didn't even have the cabin filter until I bought it and the holder a couple of months back... I hate to think about the accumulated BS that's gone through the system. :P

Your fuel filter post inspired me to change mine today - I've had a filter laying around for at least 4 years, still with the plugs on it, while cars have come and gone for various reasons... hopefully this one will last me a while. :)

Glad to be an inspiration :) I did some other stuff today, like draining the coolant, mixing up a new batch of coolant (50/50 with the yummy blue stuff), and draining the oil:

It was pretty black though it's only got 3500 miles on it (it's "Mobil Super" conventional oil which advertises a life of 5000 miles).

I also finally replaced the oil cap seal, which I've had for a few months and didn't swap out for some reason:

Much better - thicker and more supple - the old one actually broke in half as I took it off!

In the end, though, all this stuff was just delaying the inevitable... the job I set out to do... the

PCV maintenance (oh no!)

That's currently in progress, or rather I should say the disassembly of the engine bay contents is currently in progress, because I can't get to that [insert bad words here] bottom left bolt on the intake manifold. My last step before calling it a night was to remove the radiator fan/housing, which looks like it should give me more room to work but maybe won't let me get at that bolt any more easily.

Up to this point the most difficult work I had done on the car was the ETM swap I did shortly after purchasing it back in 2011. (I put in a XeMODeX unit and it's been fine ever since!)

To be continued...

First time I did a PCV change, it took me 2 days because of that bolt, so I know what words go in between those [ ]. :D
That said, in the end all it took were extensions, a steady hand and good lighting - but taking more stuff apart would perhaps have saved me some time, in the end. The last 2 PCV changes were a breeze in comparison to the first. :D

A decent set of wobble socket extensions I got from Harbor freight did the job on that bolt nicely.

+Exactly--the long 1/4"drive in the set with a 1/4" breaker bar is agile enough to snake under there and get a good square grip on that bolt. These also work well with the the other obstructed bolts.
