'99 S70 Strut Replacement

Replaced the struts on the S70 today with my brother's help. I guess at 110K miles the originals were shot. Upon removal I could collapse the strut into its shortest length by pushing the strut rod against the garage floor. Done, done and done.

The ones I replaced on my son's car I could compress just holding them in my hands and they didn't rebound. About all they did was hold the steering knuckle in a vertical position.

One of them I compressed with my hand and it did not rebound in the slightest. I guess they were due for a change, eh?

Replacing the mount hardware (spring seat, bearing, etc.) on my '99 V70 this weekend... now I'm afraid I'll need to drop a few hundred more into it to replace the struts too :o

May depend on the mileage. I was at about 110K and mine were definitely shot. I was surprised to find some pretty severe rust on the springs, which I would have changed at the time if I had ordered a set.

If you are going for the labor of strut removal it really makes sense to replace the lot.

I put all four corners on the T5 last year and the ride difference is incredible

I ended up ordering new struts today; went with Sachs (OEM but not "Genuine Volvo") - the Bilstein touring ones were tempting me but I just don't have the cash for it. I expect the pair of Sachs struts to be a big improvement anyway. What kind did you go with abscate?

I'd like to replace the rear shocks/springs eventually but like I said I'm out of car-allocated cash for right now. The new hardware, PCV replacement, and now struts just sucked me dry :P

I've used the Sachs before and you'll notice an immediate improvement. The Sachs are perfectly good equipment. Don't sweat it.
