Take out the filter ( passenger side, near windshield ) and look down into the climate system for mold and mildew

If you haven't changed the filter or don't know about it.....that's problem number one!

You can get a better look at the evap core by removing the blower fan

I am glad this subject has come up, cause it has been something I need to fix. This '99 is new to me and STINKS bad. My '98 with 330,000 miles wasn't this bad. I have done little to this one ever since I purchased it, except change oil. Plans are to do a little work on it this weekend if the weather will let me. I will pratice on the '98 and be able to move faster on the '99.
Not meaning to hi/jack this thread, but it is part of the climate system and may be good to keep it all together.

+1 to replacing the cabin air filter. Replaced mine recently and the old one was nasty:

New aftermarket filter with charcoal embedded in it on the right, in case you couldn't tell which was which

Well this story has a happy ending. After giving the ECC unit a chance to air out, it is back in service again, no worse for the wear it appears. The bleach ridded the car of the musty smell, but I my next step will be the cabin filter.
