I am new to the forums. This is my 1st post. I have a 2000 AWD s70 2.4L with 100K miles on it. I bought the car on ebay in 2006 with 70k miles. The car needed all new struts and brake calipers were sticking so I replaced those. I also replaced the timing belt. The car was running great for about 6 months and then the tranny went out. I bought a used tranny on ebay from a cross country awd and had my mechanic at the time replace it. I only bought the transmission and not any seals or anything. I don’t even know if the mechanic put new seals on it or reflashed the computer to read the new transmission. That mechanic went of business eventually. Vidal from the Bronx, NY. The car drove fine for nearly 8 years ive owned it until this summer. In May 2015 I was on a camping trip 150 miles from home and I came to a stop and it would not go. It felt like it was in neutral. Then I turned the engine off and restarted the car and it shifted into gear just fine…………….until I had to stop again and it did the same thing. Then flashing arrow and check engine light came on. Rpms were high and It felt like the car was in 1st gear the whole time. Somehow I managed to drive the car back to Brooklyn 150 miles and finally it crapped out right by the Brooklyn bridge by tillary street. I was able to coast down the off ramp and called a tow truck and have it towed to my current mechanic, Mitchell Zelman, (mitchell’s auto). Mitchell took a look at my transmission fluid and said it was seriously dirty. He flushed it twice. He had a solenoid code s2 or something I forget. He said before jumping to conclusions I should flush it out and replace the fluid and see if that fixes it rather than replacing the solenoid. He reset the codes and the car worked fine for about 3 weeks. Then last week I was in flushing queens and was driving back on the BQE and the flashing arrow and check engine light came back except this time when I would come to a stop the car would shake and stutter so I put it in neutral when at the stop lights and then shift it into 1 or D. same thing. The car felt as if it was stuck in 4th gear (very very slow to accelerate and then once it goes its going.)
I made it to his shop after aging about 20 years! Driving in NYC with a car that’s about to crap out is extremely stressful. Everyone is angry at you for going slow and honking their horns etc. Its NEW YORK!
Anyway I dropped the car off and Mitchell checked the codes the next day. I don’t recall the codes but it was in the realm of “you need to replace the tranny”
Mitchell doesn’t do transmission work. He has a small shop and he doesn’t have the space or time to do that kind of overhaul so he takes all his tranny work to his colleague across the street from his garage. I don’t know this person or know his experience with Volvos.
He said he could rebuild it for around $2K and then labor would be around $1k.
I suggested I find a used one with less miles than my car and have it shipped to his shop. The tranny guy said he will do the donor transplant for $750 labor. I think that was a fair price. So today I found a used transmission from an identical car in Alabama that has 71K miles on it. I bought it for $500 plus $150 shipping. Then I called FCP and asked what seals I needed to do the transplant.

Hopefully I am doing the right thing here. If there is anything else you can suggest I should change while the tranny is pulled out of the car let me know so I can order it ahead of time so its there when the donor tranny gets to the shop. I heard that the computer needs to be reflashed so it recognizes the new tranny and not still programmed to the old one. Is there anything else I should know about?
Thanks for reading. Your feedback is greatly appreciated
