1990 Volvo 240 DL..Won't Stay Running...

Post by mechanico »

Hello

I own a 1990 Volvo 240 DL 4 Door Sedan. I am not an actual mechanic save I can do the usual simple repairs. I am semi-retired (disability) and unable to take the car to a mechanic and have it fixed at shop prices! I have an issue with the 90 and wonder if someone could shed some light on the problem.

I installed a new fuel pump inside the tank, fuel filter and extra fuel pump next to the filter underneath the car. I also replaced the fuel pump relay. The car did sit for 11 months with gas and we have used some additives and added gas. I replaced the plugs, wires and the little 25 amp fuse on the fender wall. The car starts but will not stay running. It spits and backfires if you step on the gas and will only idle for so long. I am afraid to drive it because it will probably stop on me somewhere and need a tow.

Someone mentioned there are several or more sensors that could be causing the issue.

I was thinking of removing the catalytic converter and replacing it with a straight pipe but I was assured by a mechanic that wouldn't be causing the problem.

Any ideas from Volvo experts and or enthusiasts would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Marc

Hello Marc,

Take a look at the Idle Control Valve. It is located by the intake manifold. It is kindof like the carb adjustmenet screw on a scooter. I have not adjusted mine, but have heard that there is a way to adjust it, either higher or lower.

The Idle Control Valve is controlled by LH control unit.

Start it up, let it run as long as possible, then remove all plugs and examine.

Try running it with the MAF unplugged. If it runs better, you need to clean or replace it.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking it might be the MAS, O2 sensor or the fuel pessure regulator valve. I'll try the Idle control valve also.
