Re: 96' 850 GLT N/A Manual/ECU replacement

Post by DARK_BLU »

On the receipt, the rear 02 is listed as Part#9202720, priced at $274.97. That makes is "seem" as though it's the genuine Volvo 02 Sensor but that doesn't mean that's what they actually installed and replaced, under warranty. That warranty is up, so I won't get another free replacement of the 02 sensor. Checked for Vacuum leaks again and didn't find any. From underneath, the Exhaust manifold looks pretty warn. It could indeed be an Exhaust Leak. I was planning to replace that, anyway....

On my '96 855, I had found a broken hose at the rollover valve. Search this site for the info.

Directly in front of the right rear wheel.

The fuel filter is next to it. Replace it while you are there. It is easily accessible In this year.

OK that price is right in the ballpark for a genuine Volvo sensor (which is Bosch, of course) from the shop. Pics would nail it down but sounds likely.

DARK_BLU wrote:What makes me mad is that it took me maybe 10 minutes tops to find this disconnected hose and I am not an ASE Certified mechanic. These guys at Peachtree Imports had this car overnight numerous times in March and April and never checked for or noticed this disconnected Vacuum hose, then go straight for "It might be the ECU and that's expensive", when I could've gotten a used ECU from Voluparts for $125, installed it myself, and it's plug and play on my 96 850 GLT/NA? I'm never going back there again. I will be replacing the plug wires, plugs, and Ignition, MYSELF.

Thanks again, guys!!
welcome to your new hobby. Most of us have not seen a real mechanic since we got our cars. If you run into a problems you cant repair yourself (such as an engine rebuild), time for a new (old) Volvo. Most stuff is better to understand yourself, like the vacuum lines

The next step would be monitoring the rear O2 sensor to see if the output is doing. This will separate sensor from wiring issues. An exhaust leak can generate a these codes you are seeing, as can a vacuum leak.

After all spring and summer of the CEL coming on and my code reader telling me P0140/ rear 02 no activity, it finally just stopped giving me the CEL. No idea why it stopped but glad that it stopped. We can close this thread now.

If it comes back, may I suggest some black masking tape? I read through your thread and did not notice any problems with how the car drove (beside the MPG). Issues will come up with the car at 300k, but I do understand certain states will not pass inspection with a CEL
