i've got about 152k. the drive shaft is clicking when i put it into gear, park to reverse, neutral to drive, etc. i don't always get a click, but most times. it's a single click when going into gear. no vibration, no constant clicking while rotating.

had to replace the entire shaft assembly in my 2000 years ago. does the '05 require the entire replacement or are their components that can be replaced?

If it is in a CV joint very likely can save replacement cost my removing it and re packing it with grease. A single click is probably one worn ball/race and lots of grease will quiet it if you have led a good life.

I don't know the XC shaft system well but can you isolate exactly what component makes the click?

i think i've led a good life.

i can't seem to isolate it. i'll have to crawl under again and take a closer look. are there cv joints at both ends of the shafts?

One rather common issue is the shaft bolt getting loose - the bolt that shows up in the center of the wheel. This is a stretch bolt and needs replaced with a new part if it has loosened up.

The upper rear and the lower front engine mounts are also known to weaken over time

a little more info, the sound seems to be coming from the front half of the shaft at the angle gear. the sound is a metallic pinging, tinging when you drop it into gear. brake applied, not rolling, shifting from park to reverse or drive.

there is a u-joint of sorts at the shaft interface with the angle gear, correct? i would imagine this joint is likely the issue. can this joint be serviced without replacing the entire shaft?

there are no other noises present.

so the noise seems to be coming from the front of the shaft at the bevel gear. is there any maintenance that can be performed on this joint.

First tighten and glue (using red locktite) the axle bolts and or buy and use a pair of XC90 axle bolts
Trust me on this, try it first.
You glue and let it sit without moving it an inch for at least 12 hours or overnight
Cured mine and the clanking in and out of gear was pretty bad, now 99% quiet.

This is almost always the issue and the cure

thanks JRL. you are talking about the center bolt that holds the hub for the front wheels, correct?
