I did not replace the o-rings on the upper return hose, because they looked good. Using care on the plastic clip will help using it again - it's the most sensitive part because if it's damaged, it will spill all the fluid within a minute without warning while driving. If I remember well, a plastic tube of 5/8" is needed to be inserted in the radiator, but not really sure about the exact diameter

I did flush it after draining it a couple of times and had the fluid counter set to new. Throwing in 7.5 qt of fresh fluid all at once might me risky business for an old transmission.

I just did the fluid in my 2002 a few weeks ago. Not sure of the history on mine but it had 160k on it and the fluid was not pretty. I used Toyota Type IV and did a full flush through the top hose off the cooler along with an external filter. I was concerned that many of the issues seen after a full flush have to do with accumulated debris getting dislodged and circulating through the transmission so I added the filter. I had no issues and the transmission worked better after the flush, although it still sometimes has a delay then slams into gear when shifted into drive. I did an adaptation reset but haven't done an adaptation because I don't have a Vida Dice setup, only an Autocom cpd+ which does not appear to be able to set the computer into that mode. Need to try that before I do a solenoid rebuild.

Thank you for all the replies. Amazon delivered a case of Mobil 3309 on Thursday and I tried a modified version:

First I drained the sump - got about 3 quarts out - then put 2 back in since it was already over filled.

Next I connected a 5/8" ID hose to the bottom tranny line and flushed, stopping every 2 quarts or so to refill the sump. I got a pretty good red color after 10 quarts.

The shifting is definitely smoother, but I still have the shifting hesitation when starting from a dead stop. It's at the shop now getting evaluated and I'll post more results when I have them.

Thanks again.

Most likely your solenoids are dirty. You can buy new ones like Rostra or do a valve body rebuild. I did my 01 using the TransGo kit. Not hard, actually fun. Plenty of write ups on this topic.

One other thing, I used MaxLife on my 2002 XC70, doing a drain and fill, no issues at all. Plus it was under $20 for the big jug and listed as compliant.

Update:

My shop discovered the software controlling the transmission was not current. They specifically said an update had been made by Volvo to take care of this issue, and my car did not have that later update. Once they installed it, the problem disappeared - no more late shifts from a stand-still.

Thanks for all the help.
