95 850 Turbo vs. 98 S70 What parts interchange?

Post by gordo850turbo »

I am picking up a 98 S70 for a parts car. It is a one owner, low miles car that busted a timing belt and ate the engine. :o It is not a turbo car. I am hoping to get the seats out of it, along with other miscellaneous parts. But I am not sure what parts I can harvest and what I can't. I know the body parts are different, but what other major items don't cross over? It has a new A/C compressor and brakes. Would the headliners interchange? ABS brake module? Dash panel, speakers, etc...?

Almost everything mechanical will interchange, except for the usual turbo/non-turbo differences. Brakes, AC system, sensors, axles, suspension, cooling system etc. are all the same.

Exhaust and intake are the main differences between a turbo and non-turbo.

ABS modules will not interchange to a 95; 96-98 will interchange.

Almost everything cosmetic will not interchange (headlights, headliner, body parts, interior parts, climate control unit, etc.) at all. But a few will, several people have figured out how to make some things work, including the front seats (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=28208) and a few people have even swapped the whole dash (you can't just swap dash panels).

There's quite a few differences, but a good, low-mileage S70 will still be able to give you a lot of good stuff. When it comes to the engine bits, someone with better insight would have to chime in, but at the very least you've got;

Front seats (don't know about the back), carpets, mats, sound deadening lining, door handles (external), oh-shit-bars, steering wheel, pedals, shifter, switches (I think), air ducts (I think), mirrors (in/ext) and so on... not sure if the headliner will fit.

As for the engine, you don't mention what kind of trim this is, but you'll at least have a lot of low mileage wear-and-tear stuff, piping, air and IC stuff, and so on. Brakes are also the same, as far as I remember... I'm sure someone will chime in if my recall is off. :)

Edit; like erik says, cosmetic stuff isn't really "interchangeable", but you can make a lot of the stuff work with minor adaptions. Or major - depending on how much time you want to put into it. ;)

You shouldn't part out that low mileage (?) S70 if it was just a TB. Thats a great car if you do the top end and put it back right.

I think this is a good idea, if you have the time and money to get it running. I would of done this to mine had it not been for the 331,000 miles on it, along with other major things going wrong. The amount of parts from it may not be worth the effort in the long run.
My .02 worth.

I gave that some consideration, but it's not a turbo. Once you have a turbo, you never go back! So I will just glean the good parts I can off of it and put them in my son's turbo. I'm not sure what trim package the S70 is, other than it is not turbo. I think it has just under 100,000 miles on it. (TB never changed, oops!)

I'll agree on "once a turbo". My new to me is not a turbo, but need out weighted want. It was hard to push a 300,000 mile car into turbo without worry. My car is now living on in others, and I have a few more to remove.
Went to pull a part tonight and found a groundhog in the engine compartment. Did the right thing and gave him a few carrots and wished him well.

Not sure what he is working on, but I am sure I can rent him out if you need him to pull parts. The one is shinning at me. I think he is after my turbo.

Another question I had was whether the remote locking system from the S70 will work in the 850? We purchased the 850 with no fobs. I assume there is a remote system in the 850, but I would have to buy a fob and program it. The S70 already comes with a fob. I am hoping it is just a plug and play switching the two units. Does anyone know for sure? One of our next projects on the 850 is to fix the odometer. When I have the dash cover off, it would be a good time to swap remote units. :)

Can you ask the groundhog which way the oil trap boss mounts?

The solution to the turbo vs non- turbo debate is to get one of each, with manual transmissions of course.

The remote locking is completely different and they don't interchange. If you pull the glove box out of the 850 you can see if you have the receiver. If the receiver is there you need to get the part number and the FCC ID off of it (the small numbers, not the real big ones) and just snag some remotes on ebay or from a pick-n-pull. The 850 remotes program with ease.
