1997 850 glt turbo replacement

Post by 1ezliving4ume »

Hello gentlemen,
I've got a little problem, My 850 GLT 2.4 liter? B5254T(motor number) needs the turbo rebuilt or do I replace it with a Larger turbo:) I would like to replace it with a larger turbo but I don' know what all that would involve or if my motor would even handle it.
The near as I can tell I have a 13G turbo right now, how can I tell for sure? I am experienced at auto repair but this is my first turbo car.

You can put in a bigger turbo but you need a tune to go with it. Lucky discusses LPT upgrades in depth in this Fast Friday thread:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=51736

Some of the LPTs had a 13G and some had a 13T. The only difference is the flange angle and the way it bolts up to the downpipe. Unless you are also replacing the exhaust you need to match the larger turbo with the same variety of the original turbo.

I'll check that thread out, thanks. Here a couple of picture with her new shoes on. I need new shocks and struts so I think I'm going to purchase the lowering kit from IPD. 1.5 in the front and 1.0 in the back.

after reading the link you sent me it looks like a 18t will fit with little to no modifications. Do you know what types of cars have these turbos? I would like to fine one at pick a part and rebuild it. Also should I get a hold of IPD and look at a stage 1 tune cpu?
I'm just trying to understand what all will be involve to make the car run correctly.

I also have this thread going on "1997 850 glt Serious Engine Smoking Upon Deceleration", which is what lead me to turbo replacement. Which has lead me to this, I Think at this point I have done nothing to the motor or the turbo......Hum.....

The good, it so much fun to drive, it looks great and handles well. The interior is good, I replaced all the parts that didn't work, the auto claimant control, all buttons, knobs and lights. I've replaced the PVC kit, Radiator, Transmission, both drive axles, lower a-arm. Alot of new stuff over the last year. :)

But all is saved! If I get a motor and turbo out of a pick a part car!

I think I should be looking for a turbo/2.3 liter now, does anyone know which cars had these? or is there a better combo.

I think I could get both of these and rebuild a little better and really have a great car.

You're not going to find a 18T in junkyard.
You'll find a lot of TD04HL-15G, some 13G, some 13T and few 16T. If you look at the compressor map, you'll see 16T flow marginal better than a 15G. Both are a lot better than 13G/13T.

You should diagnosis the smoking issue first before you start swapping parts.

I"m pretty sure I have the 13 g whatever T model of turbo on my car. So, I get an engine stand for 100$ and get the best motor, turbo combo I can get, that fits the car, rebuild it and do a transplant this fall or next spring..I'm just not sure between the combination of motors and turbo's.

I don't think I want to work on the combination that I have......If I have to rebuild motors and turbos its best to do it outside the car:)

You and I need to be friends! I also own a 1997 850 GLT Wagon (but mine is red), and I've been debating a turbo swap and the exact rims that you bought...
1997 850GLT Red Wagon (13G turbo... currently ;D)

I bought the inexpensive (1,000 lbs) Harbor Freight stand and it was terrible. The engine sagged about 30 degrees on the stand and I wound up sticking a bottle jack and a block under the engine to hold the engine more or less horizontal. A good used one off of Craigslist is preferable to that HF model for typically about the same money.
