1998 v70 GLT replacing turbo- what else?

1998 v70 GLT replacing turbo- what else?

Hey guys,

Been doing some mechanical restoration work on my trusty wagon, and next week I'll be replacing the turbo as the lines and seals are starting to weep oil and it's in need of some new gaskets and lines, I believe.

I've got my turbo, and the turbo replacement kit from ARD with the various gaskets and seals I need, but at 250k, what else is worthy of replacement during this service? If you've done this before, please chime in as to what you've seen during a TC replacement- and if you know them, would you please list OEM Part numbers so I can easily order the proper items?

I would replace the rubber coolant lines and the rubber gasket in the oil drain tube while doing this job. If I recall correctly there are one or two copper washers on one of the lines going to the turbo... you might need to replace those two.

The turbos on these cars rarely break and are easily rebuilt.

It's tough to work on these in car though..as I've learned this past week

I have a 97 850 glt with a bad turbo. Its a 13g I think. I'm really leaning toward a larger turbo. I will be watch this thread to see what all is recommend to be replaced

Turbo on P80 is easy. Turbo change on a turbo dodge means cylinder head have to come off.

If you are pulling the 13g then consider rebuilding and dropping in a 15g. Then the car is only swapped injectors and a swapped ECU away from being a T5. The 15g is more fun (by a lot) on the highway, the 13g is more fun (by a thin margin) in town.

On parts, coolant lines and drain gasket as mentioned for sure, plus this is a good time to replace any vacuum lines for the turbo that aren't in great shape. Check (and likely replace) the CBV diaphragm if it is not already part of the rebuild kit.

Turbo coolant hoses are part numbers 6842190 and 30713305, I would only buy these form the dealer.

Install was a success- long and tedious process but patience went a long way- especially on one of those 17mm bolts from the top.....

swapped in reman'd 15g, took time and patience (again) to replace vacuum lines and coolant hoses. Cleaned EVERYTHING, reassembled, and...

...would you believe it fired up on the first go with no CEL?! no forgotten connections, vacuum lines placed correctly, no leaks... so we took it for a warmup lap around the rural countryside and it honestly felt like the car should have felt new from the factory- brilliant. close to my 2010 c30 t5 r-design. boost gauge shows no signs of vac leak, and it appears i've got a good adjustment on the wastegate... operates with a factory feel.

Good call on swapping over to T5 Injectors (whites) and T5 ECU (thank jeebus I have a '98) easily available on Ebay and it's a super easy install (make sure your injector seals and fuel rail seals are good)

Taken to a service shop, this Turbo swap would have been a $1000 dollar job, but with an afternoon, JAM_ON playing in the shop, and some patience, it's doable. it's a wonder I didn't do this sooner!
