I was having a random look at condition of rear brake hose as on my last mot it said

Rear brake hoses have slight corrosion to ferrule.

But noticed something else and I have attached a pic of the two parts, the black clip was sitting loose on both sides, what is that clip for?, while that spring was under the car but I'm not even sure if its from the car? any ideas? and sorry for dark pic but flash on my tablet isnt working.

Keeps the handbrake shoe in place. I would have a look inside the drum

Cheers!

any idea on that clip? as it was loose on both sides and wrapped around the hose but unsure of what its meant to hold as nothing seems loose without the clip secured? and can't see what function it has if secured around the hose?

When you say the clip was attached to the hose, do you mean the flexible rubber brake hose to the rear brake caliper?

On AWD P80 (97-00) there is a similar clip used to hold the parking brake cable to the rear jacking points. From what I can see there is a similar one for the parking brake cable on the FWD S70. Vida doesn't show the actual location, but it probably mounts with a pop-rivet to the rear control arm. I seem to recall that from an 850 we had. The clip holds the cable from flapping around.

Ok Neil that makes sense as I noticed on the passenger side the clip was sort of stuck to the control arm but came off as soon as i touched it so yes it must have been securely attached at some point but I can't see any cable that shouldn't be flapping around? will have another look.

But as for these springs, I've never touched the brakes/shoes before, am trying to find a nice guide/video but is it fairly straightforward to replace the spring that has come loose? as I'm guessing the others are going to break off soon.

Theres a pic of where the clip was

you can see where the rivet was but that hose didn't appear to have much slack so it could be secured to the arm, but will have another look and rivet it back if possible.

That looks like what I remember now I see it. I don't believe it is a hose you are looking at but the parking brake outer cable sheath. I think what may happen is as the cable ages the sheath shrinks a little and breaks the pop-rivet which is aluminum and degrades by being in contact with the steel. Drill out the old rivet and use a mall washer to spread the load as the plastic of the clip will be getting fragile by now. Also the cables are bad for seizing, and when you pull hard on the cable, it stresses the cable and breaks the rivet also.

There should be a write up on how to do the rear brakes. Not particularly difficult, worst issues is with rusted bolts. The spring looks like the smaller of the 2 that mounts by the adjuster holding the 2 brake shoes onto the adjuster.

Before you take anything apart, jack up the rear wheels and apply the parking brake, and see how many clicks it makes before the wheels lock. Don't be surprised if you find one or both are barely working.

Cheers for the info Neil, all makes sense, but the reality is different so not sure what is happening!

There is no way that hose can reach the control arm and be riveted unless its disconnected/replaced as you say they shrink but if thats the case then it needs replacing, as there is not enough length for it to run through the bracket and the hose is rock solid so it can't move/flap around.

As for the car jacked up and handbrake on, if the handbrake is off, the wheel spins as it should, one click on the handbrake and both wheels are locked tight, so i guess its possible the handbrake can function correctly without this spring that has fallen off, but for how long I don't know.

Or thinking at more clutching at straws, that spring had been left somewhere loose by someone previous who done work and has only now just fallen out lol that would the ideal situation but I very much doubt it.

Cheers :-)

If you didn't have the rear rotors off there is no way that spring would work its way out of the rotor and fall out. It would sit in the bottom of the rotor and bounce around with the spinning wheel.

I think the spring maybe the very rare Spring Beetle which only shows its head in July.

Lol You may have a point there as we get some very interesting insects here in Scotland, inter breeding and the results can be quite spectacular but I will preserve the findings of this beetle for future reference!

But jokes aside, is this a mystery as the spring was sitting under the car, slightly left to the driver side rear wheel, is there any other part of the car that uses such springs?
