01 V70 Poor Throttle Response (ETM)

Hi,

Not sure if this belongs in Don's ETM forum
I have a 2001 V70 (N/A, 5 spd,) with electronic throttle.

When driving, it has very little throttle response in the low end until, as the gas peddle is pushed further down, it reaches a point where the throttle opens up and the car jerks forward. This happens almost every time while accelerating. It idles fine, and does not dip when the gas is let off.

Whats strange to me is the ETM functions perfectly in neutral.

I have a ETM off a '99 v70 N/A. I tried swapping them even though I read it wouldn't work without programming, and it didn't work.

Any advice is appreciated!

If the ETS light isn't on, you probably have some other problem. The system is pretty sensitive to problems and will light up your dash light if it detects anything wrong.

Check Engine light on? Read and clear codes if it is, then see what comes back first.

Vacuum leaks, bad coils, and spark plugs are all that are left to maintain on The late P80 and P2 cars...what's the history of these components ?

I just bought this car with 193k on it. I am both learning the newer car, and have no idea what the maintenance history is on it.

The ETS light is not on.

Check Engine light has come on for P0420, "catalyst efficiency below threshold".
I've cleared that and am waiting to see if it comes back.

Spark plugs were replaced as soon as I got the car. There were autolites in it before. I put in single prong Volvo plugs. I'm not sure which ones exactly, and I did not gap them. I have not done the coils. It is not misfiring.

I have noticed a sound coming from around the belts. Its either a vacuum leak or a bad bearing in my opinion. Kinda like "chhhhhh chhhhhhh chhhhhh" at idle. The noise is intermittent.

I have ordered a Vida/Dice setup, but have a few weeks still until I get it.

It would be pretty hard for an ETS light to light up on a 2001 Volvo; mainly because there isn't one fitted. It may say Engine System Service and have a check engine light though.

If the ETM throat is awfully dirty you will get poor bottom end airflow and poor response, just like on a non ETM car with dirty throttle bore. Careful when you clean it though as they like to bite those who clean them. Use a throttle cleaner and try to use it sparingly and assist the process with a toothbrush.

ETS light is 1999 and 2000 model years only in US, at least. Check engine light and then the service message window on the 2001.

Is this a Magnetti Marelli or a Bosch ETB car?

With NAs in 5 cylinder form they were MMs until end of 2002 when they switched to a Hitachi unit for 2 years until finally settling upon the Bosch ETA in 2005.

This was not market specific; all NA petrol engines came from Sweden this way.

The confusion in UK and Australia is that the early build P2s were released and sold alongside P80s in the third quarter of 2000 and sold as 2000MY cars.

Yes it is a MM throttle.

Throttle body was shiny when I took it off, so someone had the same idea recently.
No ETS light is lit, but i guess i don't have one.
No messages.

Since this post was started, the car has exhibited hunting at idle twice, with rpms going from 500 to 1000. I believe that is what is throwing my p0420, as both times the code has appeared when the car is restarted after it hunts at idle.

I just got my scanner from ebay user "diagwork" for 104$ shipped. It feels well built, but does have the blue board. I'll see if it works. I have no idea how to use it, and am going to attempt to install the software now. Any advice for using the scanner to help diagnose the car?

Yes go to Diagnostics Tab then Vehicle Communication then highlight the coloured ETM icon then choose Parameters Tab then double click on the small ETM word in black to reveal the Throttle Position 1 and Throttle Position 2 readings. Double click on each of these while engine is running to see actual reported throttle angles. When car is in Limp Mode due to throttle errors the angles won't change and just sit at around 29 degrees.

Anddddd.....

I can't get the software to install. I believe the install DVD is corrupted .
It came with 2014d. I've watched the video and read the requirements and I believe I have everything.

Windows 7 pro 64 bit
IE9
Good enough specs to run it.

Every time I run setup it crashes immediately with error -5001 : 0xffffec75. Tried it on 4 computers.
I tried copying the files over from the DVD and it hangs up in the same spot.

I was pretty excited too.

I'll post up a link to a good copy of 2014A that I have up on cloud storage. That should sort it out.
