1999 V70R AWD System Failure

Post by bagman1995 »

So occasionally I will hear a sound of "scraping" coming from under my car. It will eventually go away with a little driving, this is also coupled with clunking on occasion , but if I drive through it the sound goes away. From what I have gathered from this site it is the AWD system. I will be pulling out my drive-shaft tonight and inspect the shaft, then the collar and last and GOD i hope not the Viscous Clutch. If it is the VC is it worth replacing ? Am i starting in the right area ? Any other suggestions?

IF the drive/prop-shaft joints are all good, and the center support bearing is good, the most likely culprit it the bearing at the front of the VC unit. Mine made that same noise, and when I removed it and the front flange, the bearing fell apart. While you are in there, check the condition of the support bush at the front of the VC casing. The bearing can be a pain to remove, especially when it falls apart! Ask my local dealer. The had a hell of a time getting the outer part of the bearing out and needed very long drifts to get to it.

How many miles are on this car? Also, how many owners and what is the maintenance history like? I'm asking because these AWD systems don't take abuse very well. If it was driven with different diameter tires for a longer period of time, then the angle gear could be damaged as well.

Hopefully that won't be the case with your R though.

I was not lucky with my XC. First the propshaft had to be replaced (no biggie), shortly after the angle gear self destructed (biggie, replaced with new Volvo part), and a few months later the viscous coupler locked up. I just bought a used VC from Erie, that will go in soon :D

Sorry guys for the late reply. I have been at school and been unable to test what I think is an AWD failure. When I am in the rain the front wheels spin if I give it some gas. Trying to find out the cheapest way to fix the problem with a limited budget and all. Thanks for the tips

Hi Zach.
How is that car doing? You never updated your post. Did you get the problem sorted out? I doubt it was anything serious, that car had hardly any miles on it and no abuse.
I'm back on the forum researching the little C30 coupes. I miss those awesome Volvo seats.
