They all start to do this over time. The splines become worn and the play becomes bigger, hence the louder noises

Seriously, I just went through this on mine and have done several others. If it doesn't get rid of the clicks completely, the noises should be seriously reduced and be liveable.

axle bolts arrived today. can i replace with the car on the ground, wheels loaded? just simply take out the old and install the new?

Do not overtighten.
I just heard of a couple of guys snapping these bolts.
Use the correct torque spec

thanks. i read of a couple guys doing the same. i have a torque wrench and angle gauge.

is it ok to replace with the car on the ground?

new axle bolts in. i used loctite and the correct torque spec. i also let them sit over night. the clicking is the same. where else should i look? can i rule out the drive shaft and assume it is related to the axles? is it ok to leave it as is for now or is it the precursor for a major failure?
