Hello everyone I am Patrick and I am new to the forum. I own a 1999 V70 XC and I just purchased a 1999 V70R. The XC is down due to turbocharger failure so I got the R to cruise while I repaired the XC but the R is already giving me some grief. When driving it will make a large POP sound then a grinding clunking sound that I thought was the driver side CV. If I pull over or stop and turn the wheel all the way to the right it goes down the road fine again for a spell then POP have to repeat the process all over again. Today I pulled the drivers CV out and replaced it along with the Lower control arm, and outer tie rod. I took it out for a test drive and all was fine until on the way home POP it did it again.
The previous owner had removed the rear drive shaft because he said it was bad but I am starting to wonder if it might be a transmission issue which still does not make much sense because how could turning the wheel to the right correct that?
Anyways I am hoping like hell someone on here has dealt with the same issue.
Please help,
Patrick

That sounds just awful and I have no idea. You would think something that bad would be pretty obvious. My daughter's S70 sounded almost that bad but it was mostly when turning and it was a very, very bad hub. The hub was so loose that the rotor was scraping the end of the caliper.

No you don't have to remove to check. Get an appropriate sized wrench on the top nut, and with the car on the ground try to turn the nut. If there is little resistance then the steel center ring has come away from the rubber. I have used a air wrench and taken the top nut off with the car on the ground and lifted the washer out the way, and then you can see the top of the mount.

Sorry to hear about the issue with the front end (the car that is!!) and particularly the angle gear. Not sure where you are in the US, but there are a couple of placed to get a used angle gear. If you are in the East, Erie Vo-Vo, in the west vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento, and I know MVS also listed a place in the south. Always amazed that California has so many AWD Volvos?!
Rest of the parts are general wear and tear. Not particularly hard to do.

Do you happen to know what years would work to swap the angle gear out? I have ordered the lower control arm with bushings and ball joint, and an outer tie rod end. The angle gear is going to require some saving.
Also why would turning the wheel stop the angle gear from making the noise?

IIRC, the box is same as XC or AWD 70 series, 1998 will not work, believe it is 99-00 only. See the threads in database, or check vendors.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
