Hello, I am new here as I am a new owner of a 2005 XC90 2.5t FWD. Love the car!

Now here's the situation: I got the Alarm system service message on the dash -it was there when I bought the car. From what I know it's the siren that went bad (batteries). Now, I heard somewhere that Volvo can download some update to disable the thing. Problem is, both dealers in Charlotte don't know/ don't want to do that. So my 2 choices are: Disconnect the siren and be without sunroof or... get a new siren and problem solved for another..8-10 years?

A local volvo independent shop can replace the siren for 450 bucks. I don't have any tools at home, so if I were to purchase the tools I need and do it myself it would end up costing me close to 400 -plus, my hands are very weak to do heavy work.

My question is: is there another alternative? Should I reset the message with the lock-unlock procedure, will that take care of anything or simply erase the message for a while?
Thanks!

The siren fix is software from Volvo that they will find in their list called "alarm remove".
They download the software and then the RH inner fender is pulled down and the siren electrical plug is disconnected. With the fault present maybe it is unplug then download.
You will lose the alarm feature. Volvo theft rate is low, soon to be 10 years old makes even lower.

When I disconnected my siren my sunroof worked again. I ended up buying another one for 50 bucks cause my circuit board was fried so I couldn't just replace the battery.
