Hi, on inspecting the underside of the car today i noticed that there was a lot of play in the steering rack where the tie rod meets the rack (within the boot). I have been noticing some slack in the steering lately too. I have found a supplier that can provide replacement rack end...

It appears to be a new ball joint that must screw into the end of the rack and is much cheaper than a replacement rack.
Has anyone else experienced a similar issue and have you had any success by replacing just the rack ends?
Thanks
Matt

Matt; that is also known as an Inner Tie-rod end. they do wear out, search the forum by category/steering.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

What is the tool, looks like a spanner by the image of the replacement part?

There's a few different styles of tools it depends on what you can fit in there and what will work with the tie rod. If you Google it you'll see the different kits that are available. I don't know specially which kind you would need for the volvo but I've had to use the open sides sockets for my audi because there was no space to use a wrench without taking the rack out.

An open side socket (crowfoot) seems like a good option. Does anyone know the size?
