The rectangular one that you posted looks like the one in the car. I was told the P0455 code was likely for the charcoal canister purge valve. First thing I checked was the gas cap, I cleared the code, and after about 100 miles, the light came back on.
My cousin (who owns the car) ordered a Dorman purge valve form Rockauto, and when we went to put it in, none of us could find the part. Either I'm crazy, or this car does not have a charcoal canister. I thought it was the large canister on the passenger side on the radiator, but I think that has something to do with the A/C (correct me if I'm wrong). I checked next to the driver side front wheel for it, and there is nothing there.
I'm sorry if through these posts I've sounded very impatient, we've been messing with this car all weekend and we've both been very frustrated with it, and I've been posting with my phone while working, which seems to keep me from thinking through what I'm trying to type. Now, I have the time to think this through a little more.

Okay, I'm really confused now. On the fitment page for the Bosch part I posted, it says that it's for the PCV/crankcase vent valve.
I found this diagram on another thread.

From what I understand, the part that I have is #11, and it is the purge valve for the vapor canister.
This piece below does not seem to exist on his car

Seeing that diagram, the bracket holding the valve is attached to the fan.

So, would I have only one of those pieces, or both?

Sorry I sounded terse. I know vehicles can be frustrating and vacuum leaks are a challenge. I linked to a valve for a '99 S70 T5. What year/model is your cousin's car that you are working on? What year is the diagram you posted?

From the fcp site, it looks like 1999 is a split year for this piece of equipment because they are telling you to compare the part number on the existing valve before determining which one fits your particular vehicle.

The PO455 would suggest a leaking vacuum hose somewhere in the system just because of the age of the car, their tendency to become brittle with time, and the fact that you already checked the gas cap. It could get expensive if you start throwing parts at it without checking the low cost stuff first--that is, hose connectors.

There is a rather small (sort of triangular, I think) opening down below the car just in front of the lower leading edge of the inner fender liner. That's in front of the driver's side wheel as previously mentioned. If you shine a flashlight up in there you should see the evap canister tucked back into the area above and toward the rear of that space.

But a vacuum leak could be around the purge valve or at those fittings on top of the evap canister, as well as, but less likely, at the gas tank. It will just take patience to locate, but IMHO, that is more likely than the failure of the purge valve.

Engine code usually tell you where you need to look, not what to replace. Replacing part without diagnosis the problem is refer as "throwing parts at the problem." Sometimes you might get lucky and fix it, most of the time you won't.

Listen to dosbricks, check ALL your vacuum line for vacuum leak first.

I think the very best way to do this, if you want to go after the canister, is get a light and a camera up in there, and show us what you're working with. I.e. what's there.

I can't really think of a scenario where the canister wouldn't be there... so get a good work light, and snap some shots!

P0455 can be many thing but is is usually a bad hose. They are hard to find without a systematic search or use of a smoke device of some sort.

Your evap canister is in the rear of the car, just forward of the rear wheel, up underneath. You need jack stands or ramps to work on this.

The diagram looks like the 1998 and earlier version.

The diagram must be from a 1998 model. My cousin's car is a 1999 S70 T5, I'm pretty sure it's a late 1998 build. When I see him (likely tomorrow) we'll take a look, and check the vacuum hoses.
Abscate, I knew there had to be an evap canister. The year-to-year changes with these cars are rather irritating. I have the same problems with my E39 528i, because the 1997-1998s have quite a few mechanical differences from the 1999-2000 models.
