2001 V70XC -- Meyle HD Control Arm Bushing Failure

Post by xHeart »

I have an awful shake over smallest pothole.

I will look closely at the suspension, it appears the lower control arm front bushing has separated, more than half has cracked/tear on rear.

Anyone out there using Meyle HD?

I went with Volvo, when I replaced mine, on the advice from my local Volvo Indy mechanic. He said that was one of the parts that he insisted on using OE whenever his shop did the work due to the failure rate of the aftermarket units.

Just curious - how many miles/years did you get out of the Mayles?

The drives over manhole is equally cringing.
The mileage on these LCAs are close to 28k-mi/26-months.
IPD sold these Meyle HD with 4-Year Warranty.

I went with the cheapest IPD had, don't remember the brand but they were around $80. I've heard bad reviews but they've lasted 50k miles now and still no sign of breaking any time soon. I think either way next time I'll go for just the bushings, unless I have to do the repair quickly.

If the front LCA bushings are indeed dead, consider using poly replacements. No binding issues and they will outlast rubber. FCP and eEuro sell easy to install versions

Meyle bushings don't have a good reputation overall HD or not. Some poly do last, but make the ride harder. Otherwise, there is simply no substitute to Lemforder when it comes to the control arm. True for all european cars as discussed across the forums

I will explore with IPD for replacement under warranty.
Other option would be to pick up a pair from jY, and then rebuild with Lemforder.
Volvo bushing $10 more for each, is it same or better than Lemforder?

The front bushing at each L/R Meyle HD control arm is separated -- likely a poor bushing.

IPD is firm on quality of Meyle HD, and standing for the 4-year product warranty.
I will be sending these LCAs back under RMA for a replacement pair.

I am thinking about another pair of Meyle HD with 4-Year warranty, would you?
Or cut losses and run?

Lemforder if you want to stay with rubber. I'd personally get poly for the front bushings

Yes- Ive seen this . Meyle HD we replaced under warranty. Customer drives rough and hit many good potholes . All the other Meyle HD arms we put on are still holding on with no failure. But this set was wrecked. WE also had Meyle ( not HD ball joints) and they were destroyed on the drivers side.

Right now for durability I go with

Meyle HD first,if not available then Lemforder and as a last resort Meyle or any other brand.

If customer wants original feel you have to go Lemforder
