2002 s40 1.9T Timing
Started a timing belt change following instructions I found somewhere on line. Got down to the point where it told me to remove the the crank pulley. (I found later where I didn't really need to remove the pulley!!) Under the car with a long bar trying to break the nut loose and felt and heard a couple of "clicks". Didn't think too much about it at 1st but then realized I could get the belt off without taking the pulley off. So I've taken the belt off but now I'm wondering if the cam gear spun inside the belt and if that was the "clicking" I felt? The top timing marks do not appear to line up with the cover marks like they did originally, but I could just be paranoid. Not knowing what happened, what should I do now? The old belt is off and I'm afraid to put the new 1 on.

Its best to make sure the cams and crank are lined up correctly before going forward with the prodedure. make sure to relieve the variable valve timing tension by turning the crank forwards and then backwards per the procedure. After you have done that the timing marks shoud be aligned. If not you will need to correct things before moving forward.
Once finished replacing the belt, tensioners pulley etc, just line up everything per the procedure and then (once belt tension is set) rotate the engine a few times (slowly by hand to make sure everything(pistons and valves) can move without without hitting each other. Recheck the timing marks after you rotate the crank a few times as well. Make sure everything is timed correctly before starting. Take your time and use a good light so you can see the marks well.

Well I think Im gonna retire now ! A favor to a friend ,42 years ASE master tech , and this Volvo s40 1.9 l Turbo .....Some one lost the key over a year ago and she calls me . ! So it turns out that the immobilizer is ok and programed correctly. How ever car starts and dies. Narrowed down to belt timing off about 3 teeth on each cam and beach sand everywhere . Sand packed under belt on crank and let if skip ...snow happens alot when the guards are not reinstalled. reset belt and same thing .Took #1 plug out ,rolled to tdc and suddenly crank pully mark is at 4 o clock position ,it has a splined crank and belt pully ,no key way ,What happened ? Havent tryed to start it yet

I'd say go easy there and don't try to start it yet.
The marks on the crank pulley and the cam pulleys are not TDC. They are timing marks.
You may end up needing a camshaft locking tool to get the cams set up properly.
This may be helpful...

Well ...no offence to the Volvo crowd ,BUT WHY THE HECK DONT THEY MENTION THAT IN ANY OF THE SERVICE MANUALS THAT I HAVE LOOKED AT ? Timing marks are assumed tdc on just about everything I can think of or did I miss cam timing 101 ? DOHC cars have several marks and the correct set always brings you to TDC at least in the Asian world .Im looking at your suggestion ,will reply soon ! Thank you !

Yea, it took me a while to get my head around the concept too when I did the VVT gear on my '01.
Like you, it was the first time I experienced "timing" marks as opposed to TDC marks.
But with a bunch of reading and searching I got through it correctly the first time.
I couldn't have done it without the cam locking tool though.
