need help in Sarasota florida
can't figure out how to start a post...need help in Sarasota florida...usa, everything says lock the cams before replacing belt...the belt jumped off due to malfunctioning water pump and probably poorly installed tensioner...

The water pump failure is probably 99% at fault here. If the WP doesn't spin freely it will jump cogs. Sorry to have to break the news but you will have bent valves. These are interference motors and they don't tolerate cam timing skip to more than 2 or 3 teeth.
Take a look on FCP Euros's website. Find a XC90 2.5T timing belt and see the video below. Jay does a cam belt, tensioner and pulley change on a S60. The procedure for a XC90 2.5T doesn't vary by much except that the VVT is on both exhaust and intake instead of just intake. No cam locks needed unless a VVT hub is removed for front cam seal replacement.

Thanks Mike, I have lived on hope most of my life. it appears this timing belt issue is one where hope just isn't gonna work...I assume then that I just have to bite the bullet and junk it or attempt the head replacement...it seems a costly risk to assume that it would be just the bent valve...it really is a beautiful vehicle...

Personally I would replace or repair the valves. Five years ago when I joined this forum I had no knowledge of Volvo motors. As a youth I had pulled and replaced heads on at least 8 engines (Mitsubishis and Holdens)
