1996 850 T5 - Sudden smoke and idling trouble

Post by Sommerfeldt »

Hey guys.
I'm hoping you can help me out here. I'm out on a 1000 km road trip, and decided to give the car a once over before setting out on the second half of it. That was apparently a bad idea.

I took the air guide off and noticed that the hose from charcoal canister to the manifold (through the valve) had a kink in it, and was cracked. It's a long hose, so I simply cut it where it was broken, and rerouted the remainder up and reconnected it. Took a short trip to the store, and noticed that the car was smoking (black-ish) with a new smell, and idling in front of the store, it felt and sounded rough. Suddenly, it revved itself to about 1200rpm, then back down to 900...

What the F is going on? :O
Bad evap valve, full charcoal canister, or what? My diagnosing options are limited, but fixing that hose was the only thing I did. :(

It could be as simple as that hose was plugged, and has cracks in it down stream, so your fix now has created a massive vacuum leak.

If you have a piece left over, put it back on the manifold and plug it well. See if that improves things. Disconnecting the purge system won't affect engine running (it will give you a check engine or Lambda light in a few miles) as long as you plug the vacuum part of the hose.

That's a good thought, and thanks for replying. :)

Checked the section that I cut off, and it's clear... rest of the hose up to the canister seems fine as well. The only reason it was cracked was that it's been bent at some point, and that's a hard plastic line. Must have happened long before I got the car, though. The smoke's gone, but exhaust still smells "hot" and different than before. Could it be that it just sucked a bunch of junk from the line which hasn't been connected in a while, and the canister itself, maybe? (fingers crossed... :D)

No CELs, idle is still a little rough but seems to be smoothing out, car runs just as well (maybe a little better, since I don't have a vacuum leak there anymore), and no CELs or codes...

Since it's you, tryinbe, I certainly can. :D

Sh1tty cell-phone pics coming up. I put some arrows and stuff in there, to ease the vertigo a little.

Line into manifold. Arrow points in direction of valve. This is a nice, new silicone hose.

Line continues from last pic (-ish) in from the right, through valve under that connector, and to the elbow and cracked line leftwards and down.

Here's the elbow and bad line looking downwards past the fan.

Line appears from the air guide and goes up into the can. It was cracked right inside the edge of the airguide, from the looks of it from long before I got the car.

I think you are right...you just purged the canister and it will be fine from here out.

Finish that trip with confidence.

I'm still a bit worried about the visual of you smelling your exhaust. You can get arrested over here for that.
