1992 740 - Started after overheat, now no start

Post by silver740 »

Hey Volvo people. I'll preface this by saying (largely thanks to you guys) my Volvo had been running and starting great before this trip.

Recently, I took my 740 through the smokies and at the top of one of the hills, it overheated. When I saw the check engine light I pulled over but once I got onto the shoulder, it shut off. I let it cool off, didn't try to start it, called AAA and got it towed to a nearby shop. They put a new water pump, and thermostat on it for $500.

They said they had a lot of trouble starting it up, and so did I when I was leaving there, but given the fact that I had already spent two nights in this little town, I was ready to get a move on. So I started driving back to KY.

It drove great for about 200 miles and then when I went to stop at one of the exits, I could not get it to start back up. It would chug and chug but just would not start.

Does this sound like some reciprocal damage from the overheating (messed up valves etc.) or something else, perhaps that I could do to get it running. I feel like if I can get it started, it will at least get me home.

Thanks in advance

$500 for a water pump and thermostat? They really had you over a barrel. It's possible that the head gasket is blown.
