98 V70 FWD Parking Brake Not retracting on rear passenger

Post by cuhfs »

Rear right parking brake will expand when parking brake lever is pulled up but it does not retract when released (pulled down). If I by hand push the parking brake pads together... yes they will move back to their correct position. BUT without help they do not return to position.

Left side parking brake expands and retracts perfect. Does this mean I need a new parking brake cable or is their a quick fix that can be tried first or something I should look at first? I did try shooting WD40 in the exposed part of the cable at the hub. Thanks for any advise. FYI This car is a manual transmission so the parking brake is kinda important. All visible parts and pads are in good condition and have been cleaned and are not rusted or seized etc.

Sure could be a bad cable. If 1 is bad, replace both

Parking brake cable on that side. But as you have to pull the center console to replace the cable at the parking brake lever between the front seats, it makes sense to replace both. The cables fray internally and when you pull the lever, the brake shoes will expand as you have a lot of leverage at that end. At the rotor end there is nothing that has the strength to do that so it jams on, and may eventually work it's way off. Time to replace.
