Why, again, would you rather he "forget" about the remotes and start removing door trims and switches and motors and whatnot, instead of doing one simple thing (possibly two, if checking that the receiver connections are OK) first that will have to be done no matter what happens?

Observation and deduction is all that I suggest at this stage.
Step 1: Roll down the driver's window.
Step 2: From outside of the car, reach in and operate the locks.
Step 3: Repeat in both hot and cold temperatures.
Step 4: Observe the operation of the locks.
Keep It Simple - Fix One Thing at a Time.
Until everything works correctly in the
above situation, the fobs are superfluous.
