1997 S90 Won't start on new CPS.

1997 S90 Won't start on new CPS.

I picked up a 1997 S90 dirt cheap because it needs work on the valve train.

The engine control module has DTC EFI-314 Camshaft position sensor signal. So I decided to replace the Camshaft position sensor first. I replaced the CPS with a new Bosch 0232101030. The engine will not start with the new CPS installed, but if I reinstall the old CPS it will start.

Any ideas before I declare the new CPS defective?

Want to sell it dirt cheap?

I think there is a way to ohm check a CPS, but I've never seen any literature for newer vehicles.

No 93Regina, I'm not frustrated with it. Matter of fact we are finding it a entertaining challenge. None of us have encountered anything like this before.

We have eliminated the possibility that the new CPS is defective by installing it on my C70, fired right up.

Tried the old CPS from the C70 on the S90, won't fire up. For some reason the S90 will only fire up on one specific CPS. What that reason is .... ????

How did that slip by... No wonder you guys couldn't make heads or tails out of my inquiry.

The DTC is EFI-314 Camshaft position sensor signal, not Crankshaft position sensor signal. I made corrections in my original post.

I'm blind to this situation...so, did you check the gap between sensor and cam?

Everything you need to know: A position sensor just for the CAMs and CRKs...

The gap between sensor and cam is fixed, no adjustment.


We how have a theory that could explain this never seen before behavior.

(1) The valve train problem is serious enough to keep the engine from starting.

(2) The defective camshaft position sensor is throwing off the firing of the coil packs.

(3) By seer coincident, the engine will sync well enough to run when both defects are present.

(4) When we correct the coil pack firing by replacing the camshaft position sensor, the valve train problem prevents the engine from starting.

Best theory we could come up with. We are going to correct the valve train problem and replace the defective camshaft position sensor and hope this theory is correct.
