1997 850 GLT HELP Drivers door latch wont work

Post by mta58 »

One day I tried to get out of my 850 GLT just like I always do but the drivers side inside latch would not work. My best guess is that the latch assembly inside became detached. I tried to pry open the panel to take a looksee but alas I cannot get it off. Maybe there's a special place to start on this project that I don't know about. If someone has done this repair, a little help (maybe w pics) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help !

I am assuming you can not open from the outside either?
It is difficult to remove the panel from a closed door and usually hurt things trying to do so.
If I have a chance tonight to look at my '98, The panel is off, maybe I can see if another way might work.

The door will open but I have to roll down the window and reach out to pull the door handle. And I can open the door by doing this but it's getting to be a tiring habit.

THANKS !!

Well that makes taking the panel off a lot easier.
It's best to use something like a puddy knife and slide it around between the panel and metal. It will come in contact with plastic that holds the door panel on. Pry out slowly and maybe only break a few of them.(they will break). Do this on the sides and bottom. There is also a screw in the middle of the panel under a square plastic clip. Remove the plastic from around the door handle.( may break also).
Panel will be loose and should lift up, to remove from window. The panel is full of wire connections, so go easy and unplug them all. If you can wait till I get home and take some pictures of some different things, it may help with removal. The clip around the latch has a special way to remove it to lessen the chance of breaking.

I guessing you 850 is a lot like my V70, just a year different.
You can see the plastic part from the door handle. One is missing a piece. Either pry from the back and/or push forward as you remove so that little tab doesn't break. Picture of locking part. The wire is either broken or has come loose. The handle end looked a little more technical to get into. The red things are what you are trying to remove to remove door panel. There are more than I am showing.
You may need to visit a PNP and find a latch.
Hope this helps
