2000 V70 Sometimes won't start

Post by skjmank »

I have an issue with my V70 sometimes not starting. I had the battery checked and it was fine.

Also, the car idles low when I come to a stop. I don't know if these 2 issues are connected. (Maybe a fuel line issue?)

I have a video of the car not starting. You can hear the engine better on the second attempt.

If that was bad, the car would just die after a few seconds, wouldn't it? :?:

I'd say check fuel pressure and hoses first, make sure there's pressure and no air leaks.
Is the car throwing any codes?

Vacuum leaks or the dreaded ETB needs service in that year.

No codes on the vehicle.

Can you further explain vacuum leaks and ETB? What are they and how do I troubleshoot these issues?

Of course

Vacuum hoses are the number one trouble of idle and poor running. You need to look at the label under the hood, find every vacuum hose, and trace it to each end, looking for splits, holes, loose fittings do this with the engine off and cold so you don't get burned

If you have a turbo, it's tough to see these without a flashlight and even a mirror

2 ETB was the first electronic throttle body on Volvo. Your gas pedal no longer opens a mechanical valve, it sends signal to motors that open the air valve to the motor. The first one used on the 1999-2001 models was made by Magnetti-Marelli in Italy and lasts about 100 k miles then croaks. It's about 1000 bucks to fix including hardware and software , with cheaper options discussed in the ETB forum

There are no idle adjusts on an ETB car. If the idle is wonky, you've got leaks or a bad ETB
