Hello,
I purchased a 1990 740 GLE with a B234F (16 valve) engine approximately a year ago. The speedometer is not working but am guessing she has over 150,000 miles, at least, on her. I have only purchased Volvo's for the past twenty years and am very fond of the older models. I knew there were many repairs that needed to be done, but so did every other Volvo I have ever owned. They are worth it to me.
I have never had problems finding parts. My problem has been having people work on it that have no clue about what they are doing and "modifying" without my knowledge til after they have...using two 8 cylinder gaskets instead of the correct 16 I had wanted to order but was told AutoZone had the correct part. Used two wrong gasket kits, "modified" it. I needed the Transmission Mount replaced, said I would order it myself. Oh no, AutoZone has it (what is up with this love affair with AutoZone in the Midwest?) wrong part and "modified it to make it work" How was it modified ? " I drilled a hole to make it fit."
There are repairs I believe I can do myself. I think the issue I have now is the Power Steering Belt. There is a horrible squealing, and at times it smells like rubber is burning. I checked the Pulley and it is properly aligned. The power steering fluid is at the correct level. I am a bit confused as the "modify happy mechanic" said I should have two belts and I am only running with one. My heat and A/C do not work, and originally I was told that was the belt that needed replaced.
Please forgive me if I have missed a post regarding this. I am legally blind in one eye and am limited to computer time because of the nerve damage.
Any help would be appreciated for this repair. And suggestions on a repair manual for the B234F would be great.
Thank You

Possibly similar to the 16 valve 940. http://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/volvo/940/1995
Looks like 3 accessory belts.
Volvo club UK says there are only two belts.https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/B234Ftimingbelts.htm
See section A 3, gaining access to timing belts.
Either way, your mechanic is right: you need more than 1 accessory belt. Probably one for the a/C and another for the power steering and water pump.

Am going to download the manual mentioned. I had thought the download of the the diagram had been on my cell but it had a error when i tried to access it. I am sure there were three. I believe they are a/c, water pump, and the power steering. He says I need TWO belts for the Power Steering making it four belts total.Salomons Driveway wrote:Possibly similar to the 16 valve 940. http://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/volvo/940/1995

He messed around, took it off, put back on, tried to tighten it, all in all over 2 hours. It sounds much worse than before. He hates working on her, so I am hoping with a repair manual we can work on it together. And hopefully lose the stigma that Vovlos are hard to work on.
Thank you for the response. I am going to download the manual now and hopefully it has the diagram so I can be exact on which belt is squealing.
