1995 850 Trunk will not lock or unlock with the key fob.

Post by efkaba »

My 1995 Volvo 850 GLT 4-door sedan, the trunk will not lock or unlock remotely with the key fob. Also, will not lock or unlock manually by way of the driver or passenger side door locks. Can manually lock and unlock with the key in the trunk lock. I suspected a bad solenoid, but it checks out OK (I think I read approx. 24.8 ohms). Cleaned the solenoid, but still doesn't work. Was wondering if there is something else I should be looking at. Thanks

Check for 12 VDC at the solenoid when you hit the switch ...you will need an asst to do that check ( easy SWMBO way) or set the voltmeter up so you can see it from driver seat ( difficult, guy way)

If you get 12 VDC at solenoid and it doesn't move, replace it with new or PnP

As I don't have a sedan anymore to check, does the wiring for the lock solenoid run through the hinge mechanism like the wagons? If so, could the wire have snapped at the hinge for the power feed?

Thanks, Didn't get a chance today to check for power at the solenoid pins. But yes, the wires do run up through the hinge, might have broken. I'll check that.

I'd bet money that the wires are frayed. Check very closely the wiring harness that runs up the drivers side trunk hinge.

Thank you all. Yes, I found a broken wire in the harness. Strange where the break was located though. Wasn't really at a stress point, and the harness seems to be so well protected where it transitions from the trunk lid to the body. Anyway, I got it fixed.
