1998 V70XC Cruise Control Wont Turn On

Post by dew0500 »

Hello,

My '98 v70xc is having trouble with the cruise control, and it has since I bought it a few years ago. But now that I am driving more I would like to try and fix it.

There is absolutely zero response from the car when I do anything cruise related. When I try to turn it on there are no green lights that say "cruise" like most cars to when the cruise control is turned on.
I replaced the fuse, but that is as far as I have gone. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

My ABS and TRACS lights are on (like a lot of people). Does this affect cruise control?

Yes. If you fix the ABS module then chances are the cruise will work again.

I've got a V70 AWD, 1998 model, that is likely identical to your XC70 as far as cruise control goes. My ABS/Tracs lights have been on for many months now, and the cruise control works just fine. In these cars, there is no dash light to indicate when you've engaged cruise. I have noticed cruise won't engage properly if the clutch and brake pedals aren't completely up against the stops, depressing the safety switches/valves. If I have trouble with cruise, lifting those pedals with my toe prior to engaging clears that issue. I'd check there first.

On my older 850, I had a cruise problem that ended up being the failure of a small plastic air line under
the battery tray. The cruise actuator is pneumatic (uses air pressure), and this line being chafed through prevented the system from engaging properly.

I had this problem a while ago on a '99 S70. I found a used cruise stalk in a junkyard for about $10, installed it and had working cruise. I'd suspect it is the switch. Try a junkyard replacement.
