My 1998 V70 GLT Rebuild Project

Post by bmdubya1198 »

I'm very happy to say that I finally got myself a Volvo! I picked up this '98 V70 a couple hours ago and I'm planning on rebuilding it and having it as a semi-long-term project car.
I wanted to start this thread to share and document my progress through the rebuild. It's not going to be 100% thorough, but I wanted to have something. I overdo this kind of stuff... I already have two sheets listing everything that needs to be replaced/repaired.
So, as far as I know, I need to replace the hood, passenger side fender, both headlights, pass. turn signal, windshield, dash w/ airbag, steering wheel airbag, and fan shroud.
And here's the car. Pretty clean, top end is freshly rebuilt including a new turbocharger. She only has 168,000 or so miles. A little paint work has been done, and there is some I need to do. The PO mentioned that the rear driver's side door had a dent that was banged out and sprayed over, so that needs to be cleared, bumper needs to be repainted... but it's a project. And for what I paid, I left myself plenty of room to get it done.
In the end, I can be happy that I put a very nice P80 back on the road.

Believe it or not, I have some of the stuff you need, but shipping to Charlotte NC is expensive.
- L headlight assembly (OEM, not aftermarket), condition is 9/10.
- R turn signal assembly (brand-new TYC type, bought the wrong side R instead of L, so this is sitting in my garage!).
- Brand-new spare tire (the donut type), never seen the road before.
- Steering Wheel Air bag in pristine condition.

I just came across this ebay seller ("dsstewart70"), he has quite a few S70 items.
Just enter "Volvo" in the seller ebay store and you will see:

There is a yard in the Charlotte area that deals mostly with Volvo parts. I will try and find out where it is.
Mine had been wrecked and parts replaced on it came from this place and the PO told me about the yard, but I have not remembered yet. If you are not looking to find the same color, I have most of what you need.
I believe I saw that car on Craig's list yesterday, just looking around.

Well, depending on how much you want for some of it, and depending on how much shipping adds onto it, I might take you up on some of those parts. I'll have to see what I can find locally first.

Probably, it was in Monroe. Been going back and forth with him since Sunday, just happy to have the car now.
If you find out where that Volvo salvage yard is, let me know. I only know of about 3 places around here, Pull a Part and LKQ in Charlotte and Don's Pick and Save in Monroe. Only been to the first one, though. My dad paints cabinets for a living, and he's done a lot of painting through the years, so if I can't find the parts in black, I'm sure he can paint them. I'll let you know if I need anything!

LKQ shows a 97 850 Dark green. Picture shows front in good shape. Don't know how much has been removed. Had the entire front in the picture.

Day 1 of work is now complete. Didn't do a whole lot. I took out the floor mats (just universal ones the previous owner threw in) and vacuumed and shampoo'd them. I also cleaned out all of the broken parts/glass from headlights, etc. that was inside the car, and now I have that all in my potentially salvageable parts bin, also known as the trunk, haha.
Image
I also went through the engine bay a little more, and found that I will probably have to straighten the frame on the inner fender. Thankfully it's nothing too bad. I removed the remains of the fan shroud, and discovered that the radiator, condenser, and intercooler are all bent, and the a/c condenser (which is the front one, correct?) appears to have a hole in it. I think I'm going to need to replace all three of those, and the electric fan. For sure, I'm going to have to replace the upper radiator hose, not sure about the lower one.

The hood closes a little better with the shroud out of the way, too!

I also discovered the exact mileage when I hooked up the jumper box. It's at 169,600. Fortunately, the owner's manual included a good amount of service records, the original windows sticker (!), and the radio code (thank goodness).
I found some broken wires coming from the ECU, as well, so I'm going to have to take a closer look at that. The ECU box is going to have to be repositioned, anyway.

Tomorrow I'm going to remove the front seats and shampoo the carpets. Also going to give all the leather a good cleaning, because it's kind of gross. The back seats are in very good shape, though.

Does anyone know if the radiator, a/c condenser, intercooler, and fan are interchangeable between the GLT and T5?

Look up the part numbers from one of the vendors and compare. That should tell you.
Here are some pictures of mine and everything in the engine bay is in good shape except the engine.
We will talk more, but dinner is waiting. Hood is up to give the ground hog some breathing room.
