So another rear tailgate latch not working. Read a bunch of posts but was trying not to get a new assembly unnecessarily. It wasn't an intermittent problem it just suddenly stopped working. The rear hatch dash light has been on for weeks.
I've taken the door card off and the lock is working from all points electrically/manually (has 3rd row seats) so there is power to the lock portion of the assembly. When I manually push the outside latch's interior rod the door still doesn't unlatch. There is no sound coming from the assembly so its not like it's a weak motor and not able to unlatch. I've "jiggled" the wiring harness around the door and the back pillar while holding the latch open with no joy.
I did not locate a rear fuse near the driver's side tail lights as some posts mentioned...but mine was a slightly different year. I took apart all the panels on the back drives corner so if it's somewhere else please let me know where. Like I mentioned there is power coming to the assembly because the lock actuates...
Is there a different power wire for the latch? If I knew the color scheme or had the diagram I could test voltage before I bought a new assembly (which would't fix if it was a bad connection). If not and there is no fuse then I guess I am buying one...
All help would be greatly appreciated. Thank!!

I suggest taking the latch out (3 bolts, plus the linkages and inside latch), pulling the electrical portion off (2 torx screws) examine inside the actual latch, if the spring is only attached at one point or not attached at all (my xc did this, as all the connection points broke) you will need a replacement. Here's what I used (a newer model type from 2001 up) like this one,

I unscrewed the electrical and removed straight out and swapped my electrical in.

That's a much better price so I'll go ahead and order it. It's a daily driver so don't really want to pull out the mechanism without the replacement in hand.

Ok that worked but I snapped the back door key connector and a couple of the tailgate card's snaps off. 17 years in the TX heat makes all that plastic brittle. Guess I'll need to order that anti rattle kit to get the tailgate card back on. Thanks bskeels for your reply!! $30 and some sweating in cramped quarters did the trick....
