Engine System Service Urgent

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Engine System Service Urgent

Post by russellvolvos80 »

I got this message "Engine System Service Urgent" on my 2001 Volvo S80 2.9 while driving and the car immediately lose power and failed to accelerate. Now it randomly works where for the most part on pressing the accelerator the engine rev remains at the throttle position. I even put the vehicle in the park position and got the same thing. Sometimes after pressing the pedal for numerous times the engine rev increases then it runs normal. However for the most part on pressing the accelerator it will just remain at the throttle position. Otherwise the vehicle starts and throttled fine. I hook up the DICE and using VIDA 2014D I was able to connect but it says "no fault". Any idea what would cause this problem?

Can I installed an ETM from another volvo S80 on this car? I may be able to get a used one. Not sure if there will be any issue with the ECM.

Check In DIAGNOSTICS- Communication-Network then highlight the ETM icon to get 5 different numbers. The important ones are the 2 x software part numbers.

If you get another ETM plug it into your loom then UPDATE upon starting Vida then do the same as above to compare the 2 x software part numbers.

Thanks Precopater. Over the last few days i have test with VIDA and got the fault "ECM-9180 accelerator pedal position sensor fault signal". Other codes are ECM-9520, 9585 and 959F. I then disconnect the ETM from the intake manifold along the MAF and perform an ETM test that shows both potentiometer opening to 85 degrees four times for the cycle. I then re-installed the ETM on the manifold and it reads only to about 18 degrees for the same test with the MAF connected. I then disconnected the MAF and the ETM test pass again with difference of 1.06 degrees. I then replaced the MAF and accelerator pedal sensor from Volvo and got the same readings from the test. However i now have more power on take off but still got the message "engine system serviced required" and "engine system serviced urgent". VIDA is still giving the same fault codes above. When monitor the accelerator gas pedal signals using VIDA the analog signal reads fine but got 0 % for the PWM. The PWM from accelerator pedal goes both to the ETM and ECM both VIDA does not read any whether that read directly or that through the ETM. The fact that the ETM test confirmed that it was control from the ECM over CAN, does this mean i may have a problem with my ECM? Can i use one from another car of the same model? Any insight on this one would be appreciated.

True ETM problems can often present themselves as pedal problems. Take the ETM test with a grain of salt as it's only a test of the films in the ETM and not a test of the control board. The pedals which are made by Hella have a good track record.

Practical test such as push throttle flap in by hand and feel for binding often has more value than the ETM test.

Get another ETM and contact Doublebug and he will program it for you over the internet. As long as it's a Magnetti unit it can be written for your car.

I found the problem. It was the 12 V supply to the accelerator sensor due to a missing fuse in the engine compart fuse/relay box. Not sure how long its being missing as this problem started over a year ago and was very much intermittent
