2007 V50 D5 2.4 High engine temp intermittent message

Post by Jose »

Some days ago I got a message in the panel indicating "High Engine Temperature, stop immediately"

I stop the car and cooling fan run for a while, but temperature gauge stayed normal, and coolant deposit appeared normal so it seems that not overheating.

Then I continue normal driving during 500 km without any warning message and no temp problems. But last week the car began to show intermittent messages with "High Engine Temperature, stop immediately". The message is shown one or two seconds and then hides during several kms, if I stop ther car all seems normal, no coolant overheating problems, no fan running, anything. Again temperature gauge is normal... even one of messages was shown when temp gauge was raising during morning before reach normal temp after all night in garage !!!

I went to workshop and replaced thermostat, but today... again message in panel is shown during one second.

Please, someone knows whats is happening?

Thanks in advance.

Did you replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor as well or check it's connection?

I had a similar problem years ago with my S40... turned out the connection on the ECT sensor was a little loose.

Hi TFisher!

Thanks for your response.
Do you know where is ECT located in my car?
I have talked with workshop and checked internet for ECT sensor in D5 turbodiesel 2.4 motor version but it seems that thermostat housing has all connections integrated so changing it is all I can do.

I have read about ECT sensor but I am not able to locate it in my car....

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks again TFisher:

Since last error signal in panel the car run for 250 km with no problems but today... again message was shown for two or three seconds only, otherwise the car was fine, temperature gauge still normal, so I speed up to 4.000 rpm for a while to check motor but everything went ok, no message again.

Now I have just returned from workshop and I can confirm that ECT sensor was replaced the first time. I was not sure about it because ECT sensor was replaced at the same time that thermostat and thermostat housing (parts 8, 9, 14, ... in diagram) in an integrated way.

I have just replaced again the ECT sensor only, this time for a new one that was full tested to confirm that is not faulty. Cross my fingers.

If error is shown again the only thing possible is an electrical problem in conectors, cables, or panel, I suppose. It is a very strange behaviour indeed.

Thanks in advance.
