01 xc70 with 236,000+ miles maint. Sched./chi eng lt
Hi! I have a 01 xc70 purchased in 02 with 5,500 miles. I live in Colorado and sole owner and put all highway miles on it. It's turned over 236,000 miles and check engine light came on. Any clues, have not read codes yet. Running great. Use mobile 1 fully synthetic oil, prem. gas, change tranny fluid every 15,000 or so, etc. replaced the timing belt. Have an awesome mechanic that will look at this week, but thought I'd check for clues. Thanks, Michele

Check engine light doesn't always mean there's a serious issue. For us it's not possible to give indications because there could be several reasons for the light. I would say, if the engine and mpg are good, there is a chance the light is for the catalytic converter or more possible for the downstream oxygen sensor. None of these are essential to replace unless you need to pass emission tests in your state. Sometimes a broken exhaust flexible could also trigger the light. Reading the codes will surely bring more specific information. Could also be as simple as an ignition coil (no need to replace them all, just the faulty one). I'm guessing the spark plugs have been replaced in time?

Welcome Michele..
You can buy a cheap code reader for about 20 USD. It's useful to read the vides as soon as the light comes on for three reasons
1. Sometimes spurious codes are stored and the first one is usually the one that guides you to the repair
B. You can clear codes and sometimes they don't come back!
(III) if you have trouble away from your trusted mechanic, if you walk into a shop knowing you have a P0455 code and they want to sell you ignition coil...you can politely walk out. Very empowering.
My girls were trained as part of driving to safely check for codes if the light vines on as all of our cars are over 10 years old!

With no drivability issues. It may be. Evap, cat, or o2..there are other codes it could be but those are the most common. Just hope it's not a p0420.. If it is and you plan on keeping the car a long time, don't buy a cheap aftermarket cat converter.

Im going to guess the code is in the P04xx family - EVAP stuff. These hoses get brittle and break and pop codes
