Volvo Repair Database 1999 V70 T5 Turbocharger wastegate adjustment

Post by abscate »

Well, technically its a wastegate actuator (WGA) adjustment (for erik) :D

Following the document in the VRD and using the IPD turbocharger tool
You have to be careful to get the right pressure at the time of adjustment as the pressure slowly (over 10 minutes) creeps up from the correct 30 kPa (for my B5423T3 turbo -see chart for your engine)

The threads are a peculiar M6x 0.80 - a standard M6 1.00mm thread will not fit
I found my locknut was also too loose for a 10mm wrench and too big for a 9mm, no doubt from sitting on top of hot turbo for 17 years. A vice grip freed it up, with another vice grip firmly stopping the rod from turning.

Make sure you don't let the rod turn AT ALL or else you will ruin the WGA.

I lubed both pieces with no-seize (grease, graphite mix from Permatex)

I found my actuator needed two turns to fit cleanly onto the turbo pin when closed. My split pin stuck rusted into the pin hole, so I wired it with copper wire until I have time to clean out the hole with a punch or drill.

Replace the screws (M8) onto the turbo cover if they are funky unless you like to hear the wish-wish-wish of the turbo dumping...

Motivation - I lost my daily race to the stop light to BMW boy this week. I found my WGA was unhooked so I was left with no boost and second place.

On Monday, the natural order of things will be restored:

Can this adjustment be made with the turbocharger out of the car?

As I understand the instructions the answer is yes, but then I'm not a mechanic so I have some difficulty interpreting straight forward mechanic documentation.

I think so. The space relationship between the WGA and the WG should not change if the turbo is removed.

I put pressure to the WG nipple, at 4 psi the actuator started to move, at around 10 psi it was fully open. I assuming this is a good thing.

I would buy a cotter pin and install that instead.

There is a piece of cotter pin stuck in the WG pin hole I have to clear first, it's tough getting a punch or. Drill down there.

Two turns to restore to factory setting. That is four half turns.

I believe with ME7 and HPT it starts getting dangerous to overboost. As long as I can keep BMW slush boy in his place I'm good

I have 2 turns as well, definitely reduced the serious lag it had. Peak boost is 12 psi. I think all HPT need 2 turns

Well, been on travel a bit, but back to regular commute this am.

BMW boy showed up faithfully for a race and I mashed the boost and he dropped off faster than Wily Coyote in a Road Runner cartoon..I then signalled and pulled into his lane to rub his little blue and white propeller in the dirt...

Order is restored...let's Volvo...
