98 V70XC driving without parking brake shoes

Post by dmcfan »

I replaced my rear rotors last night but as I did that one of the shoe clips broke so the shoes do not want to stay held down therefore causing a squealing noise as I drive.

My concern is I do not want to damage the good shoes while I wait for the part. Could I remove the shoes and drive like that with no problem?

I know it is a safety issue and I will fix it but I want to avoid any further damage to good parts.

These are the two clips that hold the shoes to the dust shield.

I can't think of any damage you can do to the rotor or braking system by not having the parking shoes installed.
But obviously you should avoid parking on slopes until you get the shoes reinstalled due to the increased load you'll be putting on the parking pawl in the transmission.

Thanks. I didn't think so and I never need to park on any steep angles. Even working on the car wheel chocks will get the job done.

I removed the shoes but the cable end is going to be lose inside the rotor. Do I remove that too?

I'm not sure it would even hit anything in there given the angle that it enters the backing plate.
But still, I suppose I'd zip-tie it to something so it doesn't bounce around in there.
I doubt it would do any damage if it was rubbing against the rotor, but still, if you can fasten it to something solid, do it.

Just firmly Zip tie it to the axle hub so that it doesn't touch the moving rotor.

Also zip tie the parking brake handle down so they the valet doesn't pull it up on you, and put one of those cool red tags they use on airplanes to mark INOPERABLE parts on it. :D h
