I would appreciate some input. My bride has driven a V for 30 yrs, the first a 240DL that she wore out. The most recent with too many problems at 265,000 a 98 XC needs replacing. She is insisting on a 2007 XC70 AWD with less than 150K. Going to see tomorrow. I have read until my eyes are crossing for the last 2 weeks. If the board could give me their opinion it would make my life easier, for those married 20 plus will appreciate.

I'm working on a 2007 XC70 transmission at the moment. 97,000kms and so much friction material sludge in the transmission that the solenoids in the valve body needed freeing. Also Volvo have neglected to fit magnetic drain plug on the transmission on this year. Generally speaking this issue doesn't happen to post 2002 transmissions.
I'm suggesting drain and fill every 5,000kms until the fluid gets clean again. Also an inline filter to help clear the sludge.
Like all cars the way in which they are driven and the attention to detail in servicing is so important. Look at service history. 15,000kms or 8,000 mile for oil changes without synthetic fluid is looking for trouble.

I am not a mechanic and not a judge of vehicles. Having a mechanic look at (not today) monday. This company works on V. As to being specific, really don't know what questions to ask should they inquire what I would like to know.

The owner history is the most important determiner. My 2005 V70 from Jim (JRL) is like new at 100k.
Get the car fax and look at how the miles were put on and service intervals.

At 130K EVERYTHING needs to be looked at
Was the T-Belt changed?
Has the breather/PCV system been COMPLETELY renewed ($$$$, needs to be tested).
E-Brakes and cables (they rust)
Check the function of every single part...... literally!
As abscate said, SERVICE RECORDS are very important

WOW....Had checked by a group in northern Virginia, Coho Automotive, Manasass. Though the 2007 xc70 was extremely clean inside and out. They found multiple issues....to bad, It pays JBL to spend a little to save a lot of headaches...Moving on to the next XC90 or XC70. Whatever mama whats within reason. Thanks to all,,,,

Yeah even the 97K kilometre example I'm working on has half working display panel, broken PCV pipe on cam cover (4 hours to repair), and hard rubber on tires. There's over $1,500 at workshop rates there.
