2000 S70 - Need advice for brake rotors and ceramic pads

Post by neworleans »

Hello all,

Need to replace the rotors and pads on my S70, was looking at fcp's website where I mostly get my parts but before moving forward, wanted to get you guys opinnion. I'd like to install ceramic pads, so looking for a good combination with rotors. I would appreciate it if you guys would share your experience and thoughts regarding this.

I've got an older model ('97 855 GLT) so my experience may not be directly applicable to your S70, but I've installed Akebono ceramic pads with Volvo OEM rotors on the front wheels twice now, and I'm happy with them. No dust, no squeaks or squeals, good pad life. The other good alternative I have tried is Volvo OEM pads, but they leave more brake dust on the wheels and are not ceramic.
1997 855 GLT (Light Pressure Turbo) still going strong. Previous: 1986 240 GL rusted out in '06, 1985 Saab 900T rusted out in '95, 1975 Saab 99 rusted out in '95, 1973 Saab 99 rusted out in '94

I agree, Akebono Euros front and rear with Cardone reman calipers and new hoses. My v70 stops just fine.

Thanks guys, I wasn't planning on replacing the hoses and calipers but I think it wouldn't be a bad idea.

If I may chip in, I have put the akebono + Brembo combination on my '02 S60 n/a twice already. The ceramic pads require a little bit more force to 'bite' the harder rotors than the stock ones. To me that is ignorable, and the longevity plus cleanliness with akebonos is quite a benefit.
For a 'teenager' with ~160k on the clock, the hydraulic hoses look nice but I am changing them now as preventive maintenance.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
