First off, I think volvo did a great job making the 850, its a great car. But for the life of me I can't understand why they would put a turbo in a car and then not have a boost gauge, that's just stupid.
I truly believe the reason I'm replacing the head gasket on my car is because the waste gate hose came off and over pressurized the head. Or maybe that simply can't happen because of a bypass or the computer shuts the car off or? At this point I think it can happen and I should install a boost gauge.
is it as bad as I think to run a turbo car with no gauge

Too much boost makes the car run lean and that will burn a piston or crack a cylinder. A brokem headgasket doesn't seem likely from that.

All my 850s w/turbos have had a boost gauge on the stock cluster as well. I've seen V70s w/o it, but never a turbo 850. That said, I've never had an LPT 850, so that might be it...
Anyway, overboosting wouldn't get you a blown head gasket - there would be a myriad other issues long before it, anyway. If anything, I'd wager you've been underboosting w/ the failed wastegate hose.
A gauge wouldn't necessarily help you, either. The stock ones aren't pillars of precision measurment. An aftermarket one would certainly let you keep an eye on things, but a boost controller might get you even more peace of mind. Though on an LPT, it seems a little bit silly. It's even a little silly on a stock HPT.

That makes me feel a little better, I did have 5 burnt valves in the head. I guess I'm still scratching my head on why the head gasket let loose.
