1998 Volvo Car won't shift out of first gear

Post by bmsjeff »

I just purchased this vehicle about a month ago. The car was shifting fine. The TRACS ad ABS lights were on. About two weeks ago the car went into Winter Mode, with the "W" light on the gear shift and the "flashing UP arrow" on the dash.
I ordered a new PNP switch and a rebuilt ABS control module.
I replaced both of them today.
The TRACS and ABS lights are now off.
The Winter Mode is also now off.
The reverse lights work properly.

The problem:
With the car in drive, it will not shift out of first gear.

Update: I test drove today. If I place the shifter in the "3" position, the transmission shifts properly. Selecting "S" or "E" modes does not make a difference.
2 times when in "E" mode the transmission did shift. (I would guess 2 out of 20 starting and stopping times)

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

New update:
I checked all my connections on the PNP switch. I put everything back together. I drove it for about 15 minutes and everything worked fine. I then drove it for about 10 minutes the next day, it was working fine, then after a stop, the "up arrow" started flashing again and the vehicle went back into limp mode. The unit is now in winter mode with the arrow flashing. Any ideas?
