1998 V70 XC Another fuel pump thread!

Post by TK101 »

I attempted to post in another thread, but I think the thread was too old.

Howdy all, I have a few questions about this job.
First, about the car.
1998 V70 XC, White on Oak, just did PCV, all vacuum lines, fuel filter (which I did from the port-holes in the cargo bay!) plugs, wires, and a bunch of other random things that need fixing.
I did check the Fuel Pressure Regulator, it is not torn or leaking.
I have silicone hoses for the TCV on the way.
I cleaned the PTC.
I have Delrin subframe bushings to go in, but i'm waiting on new volvo OE bolts to get here from IPD.

Has anyone replaced the sending unit on the Drivers side?
Where could I even get this part?

I am looking at these fuel pumps :

http://www.fuel-pumps.net/5ca3351hp.html

http://walbrofuelpumps.com/volvo-v70-19 ... -2-4l.html

If I got that route, I am debating purchasing the scan tech assembly as well,
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -9470674-1
So I have something to practice on, possibly replace the scan tech pump with the walbro, in the scan-tech assembly, so that I can just swap when I drop the tank and subframe.

I will eventually be putting a 4t4 on this car, is it worth upgrading to the walbro?

I have read through this thread :
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=20367
and I did not see anyone replacing the drivers-side assembly.

There are only 2 ways to replace the fuel pumps:

1) remove the rear passenger seat and cut a hole in the floor on the side you need to access near the pump, replace the pump as you are doing with an after market unit (you can't easily run the fuel pump cables up to the car when replacing the OE pumps as they run over the top of the tank which is not accessible),

OR

2) Get ready for a lot of hurt and drop the rear sub-frame. Read my on-going thread on the subject on replacing the rear sub-frame 'fun' I am having. I have also posted a thread on fuel and emission line routings for my car. 98's AWDs are just a little different.

The fuel pump inserts that you linked to will not work with an XC. The fuel pump assembly is dramatically different between the AWD versions and the FWD versions. On my car the OEM pump insert was a Walbro but I could not find a match to it anywhere and it must fit exactly into the housing to work.

As a result of the lack of a suitable insert I wound up buying an aftermarket assembly. I can't remember the brand but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Scan Tech. The floor cutting technique is the way to go and it is remarkably easy with a Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel. I cut across the bottom rather than the top to try to better retain some of the vertical stability.

I just sanity-checked myself on that walbrofuelpumps.com site.

If you chose a 1998 Volvo, it says get that one pump.

Which is obviously incorrect for an AWD.

I'll order the OE from fcp Euro.com

The pump on the drivers side (LH side) is not the main fuel pump. There are 2 pumps in the AWD fuel system as Volvo made a tank that is like a pair of saddlebags to be able to fit over the prop-shaft.

The RH pump measures fuel level as does the LH and the car figures out the overall level. The LH pump pushes fuel to the RH side, and the RH pump pushes the fuel into the fuel filter and then to the engine.

What makes you think you have a fuel pump issue in the first place? Have you checked the pressure of the system? Should be around 43psi or higher.

The 98 only has the one pump if I am not mistaken.

And yes, I checked the fuel pressure at the pump with a hot-wired relay, 10psi.

I have access to a lift, so I will be dropping the subframe.

Here is what is in my cart at FCP :
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... wd-9470674
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 70-3501322
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... al-9447179

Is there anything else I should go ahead and purchase?
Any service that should be done while I have the subframe removed?

Edit - Aha!
Found the drives side!
