Jesus. Do people really junk their cars over stuff like this?

Yes. People do.

Most people will continue to drive their car when the radiator broke and lost all its coolant, and the temperature gauge is pointed to the RED zone. They will drive until the engine physically shopped. So, instead of the broken radiator, the engine is toasted, literally.

My friend bought a car like that for $50, pour another $1500 in parts to fix it.

I bought a car like that, they overheated the engine so much that the core plug on the cylinder head popped out.

This I can sort of understand, because people are stupid. But, if you know what the trouble is, and it's something like this, then I don't see any excuse.

OP: Offer still stands. PM me your address, and I'll have someone pick up the car.

I have also been surprised at what cars get junked in US when reading posts on all the popular Volvo Forums.
Especially as the range of parts suppliers and the cost is nothing compared to both availability and cost here in NZ.
i.e. I got quoted $400 NZ plus GST for a V40 top radiator hose (genuine Volvo) or $195 plus GST for a Swedish aftermarket alternative from a reputable Europarts supplier here in Wellington.
Yesterday I had delivered a Febi/Bilstein hose from an ebay supplier in the US for $46.34 US dollars which converted to $76.90 NZ dollars.
Parts from US are vast and quite well priced generally but the shipping costs even for tiny objects to NZ is often ridiculous.
