I couldn't get any tool to go down into the recessed hole to grip the ring, the local auto stores had nothing for me, and I was breaking off teeth from the ring using the hammer and wood block method, so I figured out a way to get it loose using just regular tools we all probably have.
Metal handles pliers, large mouth vice grips, and a pry bar of some kind. The video makes it clear. Worked like a charm.

I use the vice grip type oil filter wrench. It is still awkward but it works.

Nice. This is the kind of ingenuity that sets the mechanics apart from the parts changers at the dealer. Thanks for posting.

For me these worked a lot better coming in from above, ie using them as the video here uses the handles of the steel pliers.Ozark Lee wrote:I use the vice grip type oil filter wrench. It is still awkward but it works.

That's probably what most reasonably intelligent people do, but I had to do a lot of yelling at my car before I got it figured out, so I thought I'd share the tip.
