I am in exactly the same situation. Have a bad angle gear (aka transfer case); my mechanic suggested removing the drive shaft to switch to FWD; I agreed. But the angle gear is still making heavy clicking noise. I have two questions for you experts out there: (1) how about if I drive it like this with the clicking noise (mechanic advised against it)? Is it likely that the angel gear just gets stipped inside eventually on its own? (2) Someone mentioned taking out the angel gear "guts" and use the case to hold the transmission seal in place. Is that really feasible? What would be the most straightforward way to completely disengage the angel from and still have it hold the seal in place?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
